Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a common hormone problem, where the ovaries contain many small follicles and the dominant follicle does not develop as easily. It is one of the leading causes of infertility in women, and Dr Kemball sees many cases of PCOS in Sydney. He now runs a specialist PCOS clinic in Kogarah.

Common PCOS misconceptions

Many women are surprised to learn they have PCOS, as they may not have any symptoms – they may only get a diagnosis when they try to fall pregnant.

Typical symptoms may include irregular menstrual cycles (possibly heavy and infrequent), facial hair growth, acne or obesity. These are caused by imbalances in hormone production, including a mild increase in testosterone levels.

Treating PCOS

There are many things you can do to relieve the symptoms of PCOS without needing medication. Dr Kemball has had great success with changes in diet and increasing exercise.

As well as lifestyle changes, medication (oral or injected) can be used to stimulate regular ovulation.

It’s important to get advice on managing PCOS early, before you start thinking about starting a family. If you are trying to fall pregnant, or have also experienced recurrent miscarriage, IVF treatment may be recommended.
